So, you think serious vision problems happen mostly to the elderly. Think again. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is happening more often now than previously thought. Individuals under the age of 50 can suffer from early forms of AMD which eventually leads to the loss of visual acuity, or 20/20 vision.
In the past, it was assumed that AMD rarely occurred in people aged 60 and below. Don’t take AMD for granted. In the developed world with modern technology and smart gadgets, it is now the most common cause of severe vision impairments.
What is AMD?
AMD, or age-related macular degeneration, is one of the most common causes of sight impairment in those age 50 and above.
AMD occurs when the cells in the macula – the central area of the retina – degenerate. Damage to the macula affects your central vision and causes a gradual loss of that vision, which is needed for reading, writing, driving, recognising people’s faces, and doing other fine tasks.
AMD is known to develop in older people and more common with increasing age. There are other rare types of macular degeneration which occur in younger people. But it is rare for AMD to occur to those under the age of 60.
Old-age vision problem striking young people
AMD usually begins in one eye. About 5 in 100 people aged over 65 and about 12 in 100 people aged over 80 have AMD severe enough to cause serious visual impairment. Looking out for our eyes while we’re still young is important to averting AMD in our latter years. Certain people are more at risk of developing AMD:
• Women are more likely than men to develop AMD
• Those who are often attached to their smart gadgets like computers, tablets, mobile phones, and televisions.
• Those who smoke or are exposed to second-hand smoke.
• Those who suffer from hypertension, are obese, or have cardiovascular disease.
Preventive measures for AMD
Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam once a year
Exercise regularly
Maintain a healthy diet
Take an eye vitamin that contains the AREDS2 formulation
Monitor vision regularly with an Amsler grid
Stop smoking
A healthy and balanced diet rich in antioxidants and dietary supplements, especially a combination of high-dose vitamins and minerals that include 10mg lutein and 2mg zeaxanthin daily, may also be beneficial. This is where Gummy Vzio comes in handy.
Gummy Vzio is a patented technology formulated with a 5:1 perfect ratio of lutein and zeaxanthin from marigold extract, a naturally sourced ingredient, to support overall eye health. It is designed with Tri-Action Eye Health Formulation that works with your eyes’ natural defense system to filter, protect, and rebuild from the inside out for healthy vision.
Lutein and zeaxanthin help to filter harmful blue light from the digital devices that you use on a daily basis. These nutrients also protect your eyes against damage from free radicals, are responsible for sharp and detailed vision, and assist in increasing the macular pigment density while rebuilding damaged cells, which can lower the risks of age-related macular degeneration.
According to the AREDS2 study in the Archives of Ophthalmology, apart from lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin C and zinc can also help to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We proudly present Elken Gummy C which contains both zinc and vitamin C, while Elken Gummy Vzio is formulated with a golden 5:1 ratio of lutein and zeaxanthin and is recommended by the US National Eye Institute. These 4 antioxidants are vital for your vision.
Avoid AMD. Care for your eyes now! Just Take both Gummy Vzio and Gummy C!
