A Reflection of Our Inner Beauty

A Reflection of Our Inner Beauty

Isn’t it wonderful when your child feels confident and happy and can find the words to express it?

Why does inner beauty matter?

It is common for us to talk negatively about ourselves – in particular, our appearance – when we’re expressing emotional pain. Sometimes when we feel sad, lonely or short of energy, we often express this as feeling “fat” or “ugly”. Neither fat nor ugly is a feeling yet, speaking in this manner often placed undue emphasis on our looks.

Linked to this negative body talk is awkwardness and accepting compliments, or feeling that talking about what we’re good at is boasting or vanity. We often forget that recognising our talents and allowing ourselves to value these characteristics is important for developing positive self-esteem.

How can bullying be overcome by inner beauty?

Have you ever felt like you’re not good enough? Many of us have been bullied from time to time, made to feel like we’re either too short, too tall, fat, skinny, dumb, or ugly. Even the smart ones are bullied!

The popular phrase, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” comes to mind when we’re insulted, yet the truth is usually quite different. Words can and do hurt when they’re used to criticise our appearance!

There is no need to let bullies and their words get you down. As most people will tell you, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It means that beauty is subjective and what one person finds beautiful can be very different from what someone else finds beautiful.

Instead of concentrating on outer beauty, we should focus on inner beauty. Much of our outer beauty is beyond our control. Our genes determine our physical characteristics. We can try to change some things but we can only do so much.

Inner beauty, however, isn’t determined by what people can see with their eyes. It is a reflection of our personality and how we behave and treat people. Inner beauty is true beauty and it is the only kind of beauty that matters.

There are many things you can do to be beautiful on the inside. When it comes to interacting with others, be kind. Be positive. Be generous and thoughtful. Treat others as you wish to be treated and they will see your inner beauty shine through. But more than anything – be yourself. Be authentic. People want to see the real you.
