Premature Ageing: Signs to Look for and How to Treat

Ageing is something that we all experience but know very little about. We may have an idea of how it occurs, but slowing it down is a challenge. Ageing is something that happens to our bodies over time, and the inevitable signs include wrinkles, spots, and loss of firmness of the skin.

Internal bodily functions, such as skin cell turnover, slow down as you get older and take longer to finish or recharge. Some of you might notice the signs way earlier than usual. Hence why the condition is called ‘premature ageing’.

These are the signs to watch for if you suspect that you’re ageing way earlier than you thought you would.

Signs of premature ageing

1. Sunspots

Sunspots, also known as age spots or liver spots, are flat spots on your skin that develop over time as a result of prolonged exposure to the sun. Hyperpigmented patches might appear on the face, backs of hands, or forearms.

They usually manifest themselves at the age of 40 or later. People with lighter skin may notice the appearance of sunspots sooner.1

Sun damage doesn’t just affect those who love spending their day under the sun. Staying indoors can also expose you to UV rays, especially if you have bright and wide windows.

You can protect your skin by seeking shade and wearing sun-protective clothes, such as a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective eyewear – but the most important thing is to wear sunscreen even if you are indoors. This is because UVA rays, the main cause of premature skin ageing, can penetrate glass.

2. Loss of volume

A youthful face is full of volume as it looks more radiant and fuller of energy, without any wrinkles. Subcutaneous fat, or fat under the skin, adds volume and plumpness to your face. Some of this fat is lost as you get older. As a result, your face seems thinner and bonier.2

An ageing sign can manifest as a loss of volume around the face, including enlargement of the eye socket, shrinking of the jaw bone, and fat compartment loss and descent.

Changes in your skin can also make your face appear older. Your skin loses suppleness as you age due to a decrease in collagen and elastin. When these proteins are lost, the skin sags and wrinkles worsen.

Besides that, certain illnesses like cancer or digestive disorders can also cause the face to look bonier.

3. Thinning lips

Thinning lips is another symptom of ageing. Because as collagen production decreases with age, your lips lose plumpness over time. Sun exposure can also add to the ageing of the lips, therefore it’s a good idea to use a lip balm containing SPF to reduce the damage.3

Cigarettes, in addition to collagen loss and UV damage, can cause fine lines around your mouth and make your lips look less voluminous. Cigarettes reduce the quantity of oxygen given to tissues. As a result, tissues are unable to repair and are more likely to become damaged and die.

4. Gaunt hands

The same indications of ageing that appear on your face can appear elsewhere. The top layers of your skin thin out over ageing and contain fewer structural proteins, such as collagen, that give your skin its form.

As a result, your hands may become thinner, more veiny, and prone to wrinkles. Despite a flawless face, gaunt, or volume-depleted hands, might betray your true age and make you appear older.4

There is no objective criterion for determining when hands begin to seem older, although most individuals notice it around their late 30s and early 40s. If you are a victim of premature ageing, it can appear much earlier.

5. Visible wrinkles in your 20s or 30s

Fine lines and wrinkles are notable signs of ageing, but both of them appearing too early can cause stress and worry. There are various causes of wrinkles, such as genetics, photodamage, smoking, habitual facial expressions or even sleep position.5

Early wrinkles can manifest as forehead lines, crow’s feet (fine lines around the eye area), frown lines and others. If you notice these wrinkles are forming, it’s a good idea to start an anti-ageing treatment.

Combating Premature Ageing

If you have noticed any signs of premature ageing, it’s time to take action. But even if you do not notice any of them yet, you should still take these steps from now on to prevent premature ageing6:

  • Protect your skin from sun damage by wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Stop smoking
  • Practice a regular exercise routine every week to boost circulation
  • Cleanse your face gently using a suitable product to remove substances that irritate the skin
  • Use a moisturiser every day so your skin can retain water and maintain plumpness
  • Eat a healthy diet

Radiant and youthful skin starts from within. It is important to start taking care of your skin from the inside out. After all, your cells are the basic building blocks of your skin.

When we age, the production of new cells begins to slow down and we start to lose the war against ageing. El Marino Yang™ has decoded the ability to regenerate cells derived from the stem cell of a pomegranate flower, resulting in the revolutionary formulation called V-CENTA™. This 6-in-1 Solution helps your skin to regenerate new skin cells, protect stem cells, firm your skin by accelerating collagen and elastin synthesis, whiten the skin, moisturise the skin and increase skin elasticity.

With El Marino Yang™, the skin becomes firmer, radiant, and returns to its youthful state.
